How to Bake $BREAD

Baking deposits xDAI into the Solidarity Fund and mints an equal amount of $BREAD in return. The rate is always 1:1. Your deposit generates yield for the network, but the deposit itself stays yours.

You’ll need a wallet with some xDAI in it on Gnosis Chain. If you need to get assets onto Gnosis Chain first, see Getting assets to Gnosis Chain below.

Connecting a wallet

  1. Go to the Solidarity Fund app.
  2. Click the connect button in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Select your wallet from the list. If you’re using a mobile wallet, choose WalletConnect and scan the QR code with your device.
  4. Approve the connection in your wallet when prompted.

We recommend using a desktop or laptop. More screen space makes the process easier.

If your wallet isn’t appearing in the list, check that the browser extension is installed, up to date, and that you’re signed in with the right account.

Baking

Section titled “Baking”
  1. Open the Bake tab.
  2. Enter the amount of xDAI you want to bake. The $BREAD field updates automatically to match.
  3. Click Bake. Your wallet will open a transaction window.
  4. Review the transaction before signing:
    • The xDAI amount going in matches what you entered
    • The $BREAD amount coming out matches, 1 for 1
    • The action is labelled “mint”
  5. Sign the transaction.

The Solidarity Fund is a smaller application, so your wallet may flag the interaction as unfamiliar or show an “Unknown Signature Type” warning. This is normal. If anything looks genuinely wrong, ask in the Bread Cooperative Discord before signing.

Burning

Burning redeems your $BREAD back to xDAI at a 1:1 ratio. There is no penalty, no waiting period, and no minimum amount.

  1. Open the Burn tab.
  2. Enter the amount of $BREAD you want to burn.
  3. Click Burn. You’ll be asked if you’d rather wrap your $BREAD into Wrapped xDAI instead. This keeps your funds circulating in the network rather than withdrawing them. If you want to withdraw, continue with Burn.
  4. Review the transaction before signing:
    • The $BREAD amount going in matches what you entered
    • The xDAI amount coming out matches, 1 for 1
    • The action is labelled “burn”
  5. Sign the transaction. It should confirm within a few seconds.

Network fees

Transactions on Gnosis Chain may carry a small network fee, shown before you sign. The default fee is fine to leave as-is.

Getting assets to Gnosis Chain

We recommend Jumper Exchange to move assets from other EVM chains to get xDAI on Gnosis Chain.

If you’re in a supported country, Monerium lets you receive an IBAN and make a bank transfer that automatically creates stablecoins in your wallet on Gnosis Chain.

For non-EVM crypto, Sideshift is a good option to bridge to an EVM chain first.
